Hamish and Andy

Posted 23 April 2012 by HE Paul Madden, British High Commissioner to Australia

Paul Madden, British High Commissioner with Australian comedians Hamish and Andy at GREAT campaign launch in Melbourne.A quintessentially Australian experience: an invitation to appear on the Hamish and Andy radio show. Somehow this impressed my local staff more than when I go on the ABC to talk about foreign policy.

Hamish Blake has just won the Gold 'Logie' as this year's most popular TV personality in Australia. He and comedic partner Andy Lee are ubiquitous across TV, radio and the new media here with their irrepressible, irreverent sense of humour. I was invited on because they're just about to go to the UK and broadcast their show from a pub in East London for a few weeks. They're going to make a lot of new friends there.

I realised what I had let myself in for, when the first question was "Do you have Low Commissioners as well as High Commissioners". Read more

Success story: Australian company Ramler furnishes London 2012 Olympics

Ramler furnitureIn February 2009, the opportunity arose for Australian furniture company Ramler to bid for a tender to supply furniture to The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Limited (LOCOG).

This would be a major project, involving over 800,000 items, ranging from coat hangers to office furniture. Paul Ramler, now Managing Director of Ramler Furniture (UK) Limited, decided to relocate to London so that he could directly manage the project if the company was successful. He contacted the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) team in Melbourne who advised on a range of issues, and put him in touch with London & Partners, (formerly Think London) for on-the-ground information about local conditions.

"Our experience of doing business in the UK was limited, so UKTI's support was much appreciated," says Paul.

"Between the UKTI team and London & Partners, we found out about how business operates in the UK, local regulations about taxation, immigration and National Insurance, which legal and financial specialists could help get us up and running, and what other commercial opportunities we might find in the UK. UKTI also helped us with little things that I might not otherwise have thought about, for example telling me about a commercial pass I could get in my passport to ease my entry into the UK."
